Lebanese superstar Wael Kfoury on music, celebrity sponsorship and being
back in the spotlight
HIS VOICE HAS given him fame, wealth, and notoriety, but Lebanese superstar Wael Kfoury still remains a mystery to many people. City Times speaks with the elusive pop star to discuss lucrative new contracts, changing labels, and stepping back into the limelight.
You seem to have disappeared from the music scene for a while. What have you been up to, and how do you feel about signing with LG to promote their products?
I’m still here, I didn’t go anywhere. It’s just that music takes time. With LG we are waiting for to see what happens in my music career, but I am very happy with the partnership and this is a big step for me since LG is such a large company.
So what’s new with you?
I’m doing very well. Every year I try to do something new for the people. In about three to four months I will be releasing some new material and we will also be planning some concerts soon.
Can you tell us how much the contract is for?
Haha, we can speak about that later.
How many concerts will LG organise for you?
About one of two, depending on time and work.
‘Min albi habaytek’ (I loved you from my heart) is the official promo LG’s new product. What is so special about the mobile?
It’s modern and classy. We will consider customers recommendations for new features in the future.
Is there anyone specific that you are directing this intimate line to? To whom are you saying ‘I loved you from your heart’?
Haha, maybe in another year she'll appear - who knows. But it’s about time, right?
We first knew you from your smash duet with Nawal Zoghbi. She had also partnered with LG, so did you plan to follow the same path?
No it’s just a coincidence.
Can you tell us about the new album?
In about a week I will have a new video clip airing on LBC television.
Is LG going to produce your new stuff?
If they do I won’t stop them.
Can you tell us about your role in the recent film, ‘Bahr al Najoom’ (Sea of Stars) ?
It was just for entertainment, and I only had a cameo appearance singing and entertaining. The movie was about a bunch of singers putting together a charitable festival for a man who really needed the money. I think people liked it and there’s a song I performed that people loved.
Where will you be on New Year’s Eve?
I will be in America, Las Vegas specifically.
Do you ever plan on singing Khaleeji music in the future?
Between us I wish I could sing in all the Arabic dialects but unfortunately I’m not lucky enough. I’m known for singing with a Lebanese accent obviously because of my heritage, but I have sung in Egyptian and Khaleeji before. When you are around Lebanese writers and composers you develop all elements of that music. But it takes time to properly sing iin Gulf Arabic especially if you are not from the region. It’s not as if I can sing Khaleeji better than locals. People in every country sing their own accents better than anyone from the outside but if a beautiful song comes along, I wouldn’t say no.
Why didn’t you renew your contract with Rotana?
My contract is over with them. There’s not enough time to explain the story, because it would require an entirely separate meeting with you to discuss the details.
So who’s going to produce your new music?
Right now I’m just working on my album and keeping busy with projects and everything else. I am considering a few different record companies.
LG was trying to get you to promote their products in the past, but why did you decide to join now?
It was meant to be from God and I believe God plans everything for people and their livelihoods.
Many celebrities are becoming trademarks for companies, signing lucrative contracts. Do you think that you can measure your success by how big the deal is for?
If there are companies using stars’ names for something nice, why not?
