DEXTER fans can breathe a sigh of relief – cancer- stricken star Michael C. Hall will start filming a fifth season of the hit serial killer show in June, his gorgeous wife and co-star Jennifer Carpenter revealed this week.
Last year Hall, 39, was diagnosed with a form of cancer called Hodgkin's lymphoma. He pulled out of important press interviews in October, and Carpenter, who plays Dexter's stroppy sister Debra on the hit show, told reporters Hall had a nasty flu.
But in mid-January, Hall's rep confirmed he had cancer. Many of his colleagues and friends were shocked, telling media Hall had never showed any signs of being unwell.
Four days after the announcement, Hall bravely turned up to collect his Best Actor award at the Golden Globes ceremony, wearing a black beanie to cover his bald head. He had his final chemotherapy sessionlast month and the cancer is now in remission.
Carpenter said: "I think it's always easier to be the caretaker than being the one who needs the care taking. I've been so impressed. He's been so strong and even about it all. He never got down about it or himself. He's like, OK, this is on my plate. I'll take care of it."
As well as recovering from chemo, Hall's been filming a romance/drama movie, East Fifth Bliss, with Lucy Liu and Peter Fonda. He had to wear a high-tech NZ$14,000 wig during filming because his famous crop of red hair had grown back wispy and thin.
A source said: "The wig is made entirely of human hair strands that have been sewn separately into the wig base. The whole thing is the best that money can buy and cost around $10,000 so producers have assigned specific crew members to look after the wig and keep it groomed between shots."
Hall and Carpenter met before they started work on Dexter, but bonded on set and after much agonising over the minefield of dating a co-star, finally got together. Hall says: "I think we managed to keep it pretty quiet. It was fun."
The couple eloped and married in a very private ceremony on New Year's Eve 2008.
On screen, Dexter has just married and had his first baby. So is life about to imitate art?
Hall was asked whether the babies on set were making him broody. He managed to hint and dodge, all at once: "Yes, probably. I mean, if all babies were as agreeable as the Dexter babies... it would really be a piece of cake." In the meantime, Hall's big dream is to see Dexter immortalised on The Simpsons
