Halloween Superbad Balls of Fury The Bourne Ultimatum Rush Hour 3 Mr. Bean's Holiday The Nanny Diaries Death Sentence War Stardust The Simpsons Movie Hairspray
There is a reason all of us came to movies in the first place. For me I was a kid when it happened. I was on of those who lined up to see Jaws and Star Wars to help create the blockbuster paradigm. But movies were my life and to a degree they still are only now there are so many egos involved in writing about and reporting on films that, for me, a lot of the magic has disappeared. It all came flooding back last night at a sneak for 3:10 to Yuma. I couldn't attend the special screening I was invited to because I was out of town and I'm mostly glad about that because it gave me the opportunity to see the film with a real crowd of movie-goers.
I don't know if you've ever been present for greatness at a sneak but way back in the '80s my sister and I happened into a movie theater in the valley for "the new Steven Spielberg movie about a space man." It was ET and remains, to this day, the only movie I've ever seen get a standing ovation. What is often great about sneaks like this is the surprise of the audience when the film turns out to be so great.
I have read many of the reviews of 3:10 to Yuma but I don't think any of them accurately capture it and in fact, I'm afraid to say that many are probably trying to keep their jobs by pretending they didn't like it as much as they did. Owen G. over at EW closes his review with this line, "By working this hard to be a crowd-pleaser, though, it may please fewer crowds. " That is so wrong. It might please fewer critics is what he meant to say. Trust me, crowds will like it just fine.
I feel like 3:10 snuck up on me. Maybe because I spend too much time online trolling for the "early word" on films I missed out on what was coming. Like The Departed last year, 3:10 seems to have come out of nowhere and absolutely knocked my socks off.
Again, like The Departed, it is, in my opinion, the perfect triad of great acting (I mean, GREAT acting), directing and writing. It hits every note perfectly. It is funny when it needs to be, devastating when it has to be and ultimately satisfying when it comes to its inevitable, tragic end. A great movie gets better as it goes along and 3:10 saves its best stuff for the last 30 minutes.
Russell Crowe is so good in this movie it's hard to imagine his career ever had a hiccup. I had also forgotten how utterly hot he can be and he uses that devilish charm here to perfection. He only stops smiling with his eyes once in the entire film because at that moment, only that moment, life is more than a game. Christian Bale is always good but I had no idea he could play this man, this broken, shamed shadow.
Ben Foster has launched his career and even Peter Fonda seems to be doing the best work of his career. I guess the real surprise is that James Mangold had this movie in him. I really don't see anything in his background to suggest he could pull this thing off. Seriously, it rocks with its cock out. What else can I say.
Whether it will do well at year's end with awards I can't really say - to me it's beyond that because I enjoyed it, was moved by it, haunted by it, so much that whether a bunch of white guys in a room check it off on a list is irrelevant. It is my favorite film of the year so far and will be among my top ten by year's end.
Oh, and the sneak crowd? The theater was packed and surprised, electric applause at the end.
